Plant morphology

Plant morphology deals with the outer form (Gestalt, phenotype) of plants. It provides the conceptual and terminological fundament for plant sciences.

Plant morphology is one of the oldest disciplines in botany with a long and controversially discussed history. In Germany, it was strongly influenced by the typological concept of Wilhelm Troll resulting in scientific isolation for many years.

Today, plant morphology is an evolutionary discipline dealing with basic developmental questions and character reconstruction. It is closely linked with disciplines like biomechanics, ecology, phylogenetic systematics and developmental genetics.
